Player Ratings: Portland 3-2 RSL

RSL’s center backs had a few mistakes that cost a few goals.

MLS: Real Salt Lake at Portland Timbers Soobum Im-USA TODAY Sports

Zac MacMath - 5 We really needed just one big save from MacMath and did not get it. He ended the game with zero saves in Portland.

Donny Toia - 3 Toia’s positioning and communication were lacking during some critical moments that allowed Portland to get ahead.

Toni Datkovic - 5.5 Datkovic put RSL in a tough position early by committing a handball in the box allowing Portland the PK. Outside of that one moment, however, he showed some real quality.

Justen Glad - 5.5 Glad had some nice stops but was also part of some confusion in the back when Portland pushed forward.

Aaron Herrera - 6 Herrera played a solid game doing what he does best. He got forward a lot and provided quality service in and around the box and defended his side of the field well.

Pablo Ruiz - 5.5 Ruiz lost a few too many of the battles in the midfield but did have a really nice assist on Kreilach’s goal.

Everton Luiz - 4.5 Luiz played with frustration showing through as the game played on. He lost some focus and lost the ball in a couple bad spots.

Damir Kreilach - 7 Kreilach had another game in which he was dangerous and showed how good he is with headers. He had four shots on goal and his first touch to give himself space to score RSL’s second goal was top shelf stuff.

Albert Rusnak - 7 Rusnak created a lot of looks for himself and his teammates and got a nice nearside goal when he caught Portland’s keeper leaning the other way.

Jonathan Menendez - 6.5 Another game in which Menendez’s combination play was on full display. He put the ball in places where RSL’s forwards probably should have done more with it.

Rubio Rubin - 6 Rubin was pretty unlucky not to score in this one. If justice was a part of soccer, he definitely would have had one with his work rate and ability to make a decent chance out of a ball into space.

Substitutes

Bobby Wood - 5.5 Wood shared the ball in the box looking for the better shot. Unfortunately the plays did not lead to goals.

Noah Powder - 5 Powder saw some decent minutes for RSL and did not look scared of the moment. Alternatively, he played aggressively and showed that RSL might be deeper at left back than we thought.
