According to a report from Sam Stejskal of The Athletic, Real Salt Lake has recently interviewed USMNT legend Landon Donovan for the coaching vacancy as well as a number of other candidates.

Citing unnamed sources, the article states that the club has spoken to “a large number of candidates” in its search for a new head coach, which includes Landon Donovan as well as Jason Kreis and Atlanta United assistant coach Rob Valentino.

Of course, Donovan is the headliner here as he’s the biggest name of the mentioned candidates, making a name for himself not only as a USMNT legend but as a head coach and co-owner of USL side San Diego Loyal.

As most fans will remember, this isn’t the first time Donovan has been linked to RSL, as he and the club were apparently in talks to sign him as a designated player back in 2017 but it ended up falling through.

It’s also reported that the club hasn’t made it to their final round of interviews, suggesting that the number of candidates is still fairly large before narrowing it down to a few front runners. If nothing else, this at least confirms that RSL is putting some real effort into looking outside the club to hire an experienced head coach to fill the vacancy left by previous coach Freddy Juarez when he made the move to Seattle.

We’ll keep this story updated as more details become available.
