Could Real Salt Lake be on the verge of a new record?
No season for RSL — not once in the last 16 years — has the club had two players with 10 or more assists in a single season.
This year, we’re within touching distance of that. Albert Rusnak reached his 10th assist last night with the provider for RSL’s opener against LA Galaxy, and Aaron Herrera is sitting at nine assists. It’s quite an outlay.
Already, Rusnak’s 10 puts him inside the top 10 assist-providing seasons. He holds the second-place record at 14 in 2017, behind only Javier Morales at 15 in 2008. Should Herrera reach the ten-mark, he’d also enter that top 10 category. It’s elite territory, and Herrera would easily be the only defender to count in those ranks.
The question, then: Will Rusnak climb these ranks? And will Herrera join him in the double-digits? The odds are looking pretty solid, but with just seven matches remaining, it would be surprising to see too much movement. Still, you never know, right?
