Saucedo showing his fire inside

Real Salt Lake youth proves the haters wrong

In Sebastian ‘Bofo’ Saucedo’s post match interview with Sam Yarock after the 1-0 victory of the Seattle Sounders victory on Saturday Bofo made a statement that stood out to me. Normally these statements and responses all sound pretty typical. It’s not that what the players have to say are not original or that they are not relevant to what is happening in the world revolving around the team. In this case Bofo vented frustration and communicated to the Real Salt Lake fan base that the players listen, and he disagrees.

“It takes hard work and dedication from all of us. Obviously we go away, all the fans criticize us and tell us that “oh, you guys lose every single game” and stuff like that. We want to win, ya know? We don’t want to go out to an away game and lose. We want to get a result, most importantly for the team and mostly for the fans, for everyone to be happy. I think not a lot of people understand that. Today is a special day, getting our first away game. We just build from here.”

It's not that hard to relate in someway or another. Everyone has had these kind of weeks before. It’s probably not just a sentiment felt by one player. It’s probably a sentiment felt by numerous players, especially these young, up-and-coming players. With all the hype the media created before the start of the season surrounding them, we left the players in a vulnerable position. When expectations weren’t met a door was opened for a whole lot of hate and negativity. A door with a giant veil that allows some people to express things that would not be said in the real world.

We know what kind of quality the Real Salt Lake youth possess, and I still stand by every word I’ve written promoting those skills on the field. These players will, in time, show us that they do in fact belong in a RSL jersey. There’s a reason that coaches have deemed them worthy enough to wear the Claret and Cobalt. There are a lot of them. Why else would they invest years of time and money into players from the youth level and beyond. They see it day in and day out at practice, in the games, and representing USA on the world level.

There are haters in the world, without a doubt. The internet has allowed them to say some cowardly things. The one thing you've got to remember is, the people that are RSLTID are going to be there on game day supporting you week in and week out bleeding claret with you, because you’re right Bofo, those of us who care want everyone to be happy. Keep working hard and we’ll keep cheering loud.

I believe that there’s a ton to be optimistic about with what is happening on the field, and those who see the cup half empty still have Nick Rimando to be happy about. We may not be where we want to be at this point in the season, but continual growth is a part of this game. With all the youth the club has committed to there has to be growing pains, no way around it really. But Bofo, you’re scoring game winning goals, so let the haters do their thing and you keep doing yours. It’s more impressive than what they have to say anyway.
