RSL cruise over FC Tucson 3-1 on Saborio brace, Mulholland assists

Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

Real Salt Lake defeated PDL side FC Tucson 3-1 in the third game of the Desert Diamond Cup. Alvaro Saborio scored twice and Aaron Maund had a goal and an assist in the winning effort. Luke Mulholland chipped in with two assists on the night.

Saborio scored the his first goal in the 24th minute. Maund made a run to the end line and cut the ball back to the top of the box where Saborio was waiting. His shot beat the diving Tucson keeper.

RSL got their second goal of the night in the 44th minute when Mulholland had a set piece opportunity near the Tucson goal. His ball beautifully found the head of Maund who was able to put it away.

RSL continued to attack and moments before the halftime whistle the team had another dead ball chance in front of the Tucson net. Mulholland once again set in a wonderful ball and Saborio flicked the ball on to score his second goal on the night.

FC Tucson came back strong in the second half really trying to take the game to RSL. Their efforts were rewarded with a goal in the 59th minute of play. Tucson continued to attack and almost had a second goal if not for the heads up play of Kwame Watson-Siriboe who was making his preseason debut as a second half sub.

The best chance for RSL in the second half came as academy player Justen Glad made a great run getting behind the Tucson defense and found Saborio alone at the penalty spot. Saborio chance at a hat trick was not to be as his shot went wide right.

There were many positive signs coming out of this preseason match. Mulholland continues to look like he will be a big contributor to the RSL midfield this season. His passing appears to be above average and he showed tonight that he is very good with set pieces.

Jordan Allen also had a very good night. He went the full 90 playing at the top of the diamond. He was very impressive in this role and he is very good with the ball at his feet. He also had a blast at goal in the first half that, if it wasn't for a good save by the Tucson keeper, would have hit the back of the net.

Others that looked good tonight included Glad as well as Rich Balchan. Balchan played the first half and really did well getting into the RSL attack. Although he only had limited time in the match, Glad also looked really good. The 16 year old came in and was very composed for someone so young. He has a bright future.

RSL will finish up the Desert Diamond Cup with a match against Chivas USA. That match is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
