Around MLS: A statistical look at goals and shooting success

An earlier article showed the goals and fouls for all teams near the mid-point of the season. I thought it would be interested to see what has changed roughly 10 games later. For length this will be split into two articles, a second will follow next week with Fouls for/against.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

624 goals have been scored so far this season, which gives an average of 2.61 goals per game. 1.6 of those have been for the Home team, and 1.01 for the Away team.

With a net goals per game at -1.04 it's clear to see why they're in last place. A lacking offense coupled with a porous defense is not the path to success. 31% of their shots are on goal, but only 16% of those result in a goal. Their opponents Shots fare better with 35% of shots being on goal and 35% of those scoring - 2nd worst in the league.

A league low 45 Goals Against gives them a net GPG of -0.84. Teams outshoot Chivas at a phenomenal rate, and there is only so much Dan Kennedy can do when facing a barrage. While 35% of their shots are on goal, only 28% have scored, the shot imbalance results in 36% of opponents shots being on target, and the fact that only 32% of those got past Kennedy is a testament to his ability.
